It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden death of our mother and grandmothe­r, A. Cecilia (Hickey) Mortimer, 83, on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at the An Cala palliative care unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness.

In her early years, Cecilia was employed with the Co-op grocery store in Ashby and Angel’s Groceteria, and then met the love of her life Sidney.

Mom stayed home to raise her family and was a devoted wife and mother. For many years mom loved to crochet and bake and was famous for her brownies. She always kept fit, loved to walk and was well known in the Royal Avenue neighbourh­ood for her daily walks.

Cecilia was a member of St. Theresa’s parish and known as the “choir mom” to all members of the six o’clock folk choir.

Mom was predecease­d by her husband, Sidney in 2002, her parents, James and Anastacia (nee Bruce) Hickey, her sisters, Rita (Bill) Cameron and Madelyn (Cyril) Costello.

Mom will be dearly missed by her five children, George, Sydney, Bruce (Charlotte), Sydney, Shelia (Kevin) Cooke, Sydney Forks, Donna (Terry) Keough, Albert Bridge, and John (Brenda), Glace Bay; and her eight grandchild­ren, Christophe­r and Michael Cooke, Mitchell and Brandy Mortimer, Andrew Mortimer and Brian, David and Sarah Mortimer. She is also survived by her sister, Theresa (Wilfred) MacDonald, Sydney; and her brothers, Jim Hickey, Sydney, and Jack (Betty) Hickey, Port Hawkesbury.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. A funeral mass will be celebrated 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5 in St. Joseph’s Church, Rev. Jim Oliver will officiate. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
