Joseph Francis ‘Joe’ Nicholson,

88, Dominion April 4, 1925-May 20, 2013

-

On May 20, we lost one of our finest examples of a true gentleman. Joe Nicholson passed away in his sleep surrounded by family in Truro.

It was a privilege to share time with Joe. He was the epitome of selflessness, always placing the needs of others before his own, especially his family for whom he was so devoted. Hearing the daily exploits of his grandchildren made him light up with pride.

Besides his enduring love for his family, the powerful constant throughout his life was his deep and unwavering faith. Joe was a humble, prayerful man. He was a rock.

Joe started a 44-year career in coal mining at age 16 to help support his family after the passing of his father. From there he began contributing to his community in so many ways including as a volunteer firefighter for 36 years, as a minor hockey coach and as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of bowling leagues, dart leagues, Dominion Seniors Club and an active member of St. Eugene’s Roman Catholic Church. He was also one of the founders of the Shamrock Club in Dominion, which began under its original owners as a not-for-profit club to raise money for charity. In 2002, Joe and his wife Teresa were recog- nized by the Dominion Hawks Club for their many contributions to their community.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, John ‘ Jack’ Nicholson and Christina (McNeil) Nicholson, special aunt, Florence, who lived in New York, brother-in-law, Neil Burroughs.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Teresa (McKinnon); son, Joe and daughter-in-law, Angele; granddaughters, Sophie and Chloe; sister, Carmel Burroughs; nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends.

While we all feel the tremendous loss of such a wonderful man of such high integrity, we celebrate our good fortune to live our life alongside him.
