OTTAWA, Ont. — A statement was read in the House of Commons Thursday, to honour the life of Cape Breton Post editor Chris Hayes.
MP for Sydney-Victoria, Mark Eyking made a statement to recognize Hayes who died in a tragic accident in Cheticamp over the weekend.
“Mr. Speaker, I rise today to announce the untimely passing of a true Cape Breton ambassador, Mr. Chris Hayes,” said Eyking. “Chris passed away on the weekend after a tragic accident while doing something he was truly passionate about, enjoying the great outdoors in Cape Breton.”
Eyking continued, “Chris had a great sense of spirit and adventure, discovering all the outdoors had to offer. I had the opportunity to witness this first-hand through my time at the archery club.”
In his 29 years at the Post, Hayes held a multitude of positions from assignment editor to reporter. At the time of his death, Hayes was serving as both a reporter and editor.
“Chris encompassed all the qualities of a great journalist,” said Eyking. “He was dedicated and compassionate, taking on many issues with fairness and conviction. The industry lost a true champion. He was a very genuine person and passionate about his family, his work and his community.”
Eyking received applause after asking fellow MPs to extend condolences to Hayes’ wife, Marlene, and his sons, Robert, Richard and Joshua.
