Glace Bay food bank telethon to be held Sunday

-

GLACE BAY — Officials with the Glace Bay Food Bank are hoping the public will care and share, once again.

The 8th annual Jack Bonaparte Caring and Sharing Telethon will be held Sunday from 1-5 p.m.

It will include entertainment, draws, and auction items.

“There were all kinds of businesses that made generous donations for the auction and we will also just be putting people’s names in during the telethon for draws.”

MacPherson said this is their major fundraiser.

“This is one of the many things that keeps us going.”

She said the fundraiser is spearheaded by Seaside Communications and it has raised a lot of funds for the food bank over the years.

“We are really grateful for everything they do.”

Last year $14,000 was raised. She said although the amount was down from previous years, donations kept coming in after it ended.

“We had a lot of people who were unable to call in who didn’t know it was on and donated afterwards.”

MacPherson said it is hoped to raise about $15,000 this year but they’ll be happy with whatever they bring in.

“With the economy we have, we’ll be pleased with whatever we take in. Whatever we raised is more than we had in the beginning.”

The funds are used to keep the food bank going and to purchase any needed food items not donated, during the year.

The telethon will be televised.

People are encouraged to drop in Seaside’s studio on Grand lake Road during the telethon.

Anyone wishing to call in a donation during the telethon can call 567-1200.
