Glace Bay sports history remembered

Calendar brings variety of teams back to life

-

The Glace Bay Sports Heritage Society has once again created a calendar featuring 12 photos of teams from Glace Bay’s celebrated sports past.

The calendar is a fundraising effort for charitable organizations, scholarships and sports-related activities.

In the new calendar, the month of January has the 1947-48 Glace Bay YAC hockey team that captured the Nova Scotia midget championship, while February features the 1949-50 No. 11 Canadian Legion rugby team, McCurdy Cup finalists.

On the March page is the 1952 Bay By’s softball team, winners of the Nova Scotia Senior ‘A’ title and April has the 1957 Parkside juvenile baseball squad that won the Cape Breton title that year.

The image featured for the month of May is one of the 1959 Sterling Pirates Little League team that won the town championship that year, while June has the Cape Breton champion 1965-66 Glace Bay Junior Miners hockey team.

Nova Scotia title holders from 1977, the Glace Bay Alpine senior fastball team, is July’s featured team.

The August image comes from the 1985-86 Glace Bay Bantam ‘B’ Hawks hockey team. That squad was the Nova Scotia champions that year.

In September readers will find the 1991 edition of the Glace Bay Colonels Little League team that claimed the Canadian Little League title.

The month of October image shows the members of the 1993 Table Head intermediate ‘D’ fastball team, winners of the Nova Scotia title that year.

November has the 1994-95 Glace Bay Irving Miners bantam ‘AAA’ hockey team, a Cape Breton finalist that year, leaving the 2013 Joe Parsons Construction Islanders hockey team with the honour of holding the last page of the calendar with the month of December spot. That club won the ‘A’ division of the annual Jason Simmons Memorial Hockey Tournament.

Bonus photos are seen on the cover where an image from 1920 of the Alexandra Rink on McKeen Street is found and inside where a photo of the 1934-35 Hub Hawks team that won the Cape Breton senior hockey championship can be seen.

Calendars cost $10 each and can be obtained from Barry Verbeski, 849-0313, Cecil MacQueen, 849-2471, Joe (Gobbler) MacDonald, 849-6783 and Rudy MacDougall, 849-6186.
