Cape Breton midget teams held winless over weekend

SYDNEY — The Cape Breton Tradesmen suffered a 7-1 setback to the Cole Harbour Pro Hockey Life Wolfpack in Nova Scotia EastLink Major Midget Hockey League action on Sunday at Centre 200.

Quinn Marshall was the lone goal scorer for the Tradesmen against the firstplace Wolfpack.

Brendan Humphreys led Cole Harbour with two goals and an assist, while Nick Bruce had a four-point game with a goal and three helpers. Also filling the net with single goals were Connor Peveril, Andrew Dumaresque, Aaron Maillet and Alex Arab.

Mark Grametbaue­r stopped 22 shots in the win. Matthew O’Rielly made 30 saves in the loss.

Saturday at Centre 200, Tristan Nordine netted a hat trick but it wasn’t enough as the Tradesmen were doubled 8-4 by the Wolfpack.

In addition to Nordine’s heroics, the Tradesmen picked up a goal from Ryan Wilson.

For the Wolfpack, Arab and Gregor MacLeod each netted two goals, while Devon Rose, Brody MacIsaac, Dumaresque and Bruce all fired singles.

Rowan O’Brien recorded the win in net with 27 saves. Logan Cooke and O’Rielly split the duties in the Tradesmen net, making 14 stops apiece.

In Dartmouth on Sunday, the Cape Breton West Islanders fell to the Newbridge Academy Gladiators 2-1.

Konnor Timmons scored on the power in the third to bring the Islanders within a goal, but it was as close as they would get to a comeback. Alex MacDonald and Noah McMullin scored secondperi­od tallies for the Gladiators.

A 30-save game for Aaron Mantle ensured the win in goal.

Daniel Liengme shouldered the loss. His shot totals were not recorded.

Saturday, the Islanders were defeated 4-2 by the Halifax McDonald’s at the Halifax Civic Centre.

The Islanders took an early 2-0 lead with goals by Stephen Sisco and Joshua Stewart.

However, the rest of the game was dominated by the Halifax McDonalds who picked up goals by Carter Piercey, Ryan MacEachen, Luc Poirier and Cody Grant.

Justin Ritcey made 32 saves in net for the win, while Levi Denny made 35 saves in the loss.
