Junior Miners edge Blues, Pirates clip Junior Mariners

GLACE BAY — Ryan Bursey netted the game winner in overtime as the Glace Bay Junior Miners defeated the Cumberland County Blues 6-5 in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League action Saturday at the Bayplex.

It was Bursey’s second goal of the night after picking up a goal in the second period of regulation play.

Also scoring for the Junior Miners were Tyler Pyke with two goals, and John Michael Walsh and Colton Abraham with singles.

Responding for the Blues were Dmitry Anikin with two goals, Jon Tattrie, MacKenzie Young and Jesse Colborne.

Nick Walsh picked up the win in net after facing 30 shots. Jesse Cox was tagged with the loss after facing 49 shots.

The Strait Pirates picked up a win in Musquodobo­it Harbour on Saturday night, edging the Eastern Shore Junior Mariners 3-2 at the Eastern Shore Recreation Centre. Brandon Boudreau played the role of hero for the Pirates, scoring the winner with 14 seconds left in regulation.

Marc Bourgeois scored and added an assist, while Kenzie Dowie had a single. Both Dominic Howell and Jordan Cox scored and added a helper for the Junior Mariners.

Marcus Otmar made 20 saves in the win, while Tyler Boudreau deflected 20 pucks in the loss.

The Cape Breton teams were in action on Friday night as well.

In Angionish, Sam Johnson netted two goals to help the Junior Miners defeat the Antigonish Farmers’ Mutual Junior Bulldogs 6-4.

Also scoring in the Miners win were Sean Ferguson, Bursey, Pyke and Zach Walsh.

Responding for Antigonish in the loss were Mitch Getson, Tim MacDougall, Andrew Foster and Riley Cameron.

Scott MacDonald made 24 saves in net for the win, while Patrick McNamara made 28 saves in the loss.

Also on Friday, the Pirates defeated the Pictou County Scotians 5-3 at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

Scott MacLean, Boudreau, Bourgeois, Dave Greencorn and Bryson Landry all scored singles for the Pirates win.

Tyler Chisholm led the Scotians offence with two goals, while Jeremy Owens tallied a single goal.

Shawn Jeffrey made 18 saves for the Pirates win, while Ben Goss made 25 stops in the Scotians loss.
