Another suggestion for war memorial site

-

To the editor, Perhaps a more appropriate place for the ‘Mother Canada’ war memorial would be on Cape Breton’s eastern-most point – the spit of land called Cape Breton, for which the island is named.

This is the closest point to Europe on mainland North America.

Placing the statue and additional commemorative structures at Cape Breton would draw much-needed visitors to the Fortress of Louisbourg. It would not block the impressive views of the Cabot Strait along the Cabot Trail, but instead would face the North Atlantic waters where war ships were deployed from Louisbourg and Sydney.

In addition, a ‘ Mother Canada’ War Memorial at Cape Breton would be situated near another notable woman’s memorial plaque – Beryl Markham – who made the first westward flight from London to North America in 1936 and landed at Cape Breton.

The closest town to Cape Breton is the tiny fishing village of Baleine. The area is a magnificently beautiful coastline overlooked by most tourists. Yet there are restaurants, accommodations, hiking trails and camping sites in Louisbourg and along the coastal drive to Glacé Bay.

Ideally, situating the memorial at Cape Breton would encourage

politicians to complete the longawaited Fleur de Lis Trail and create another spectacular coastal loop on the southeastern side of Cape Breton.

This solution would probably please everyone. Allister MacDonald
