Artisans invited to Sydney conference about creative business

-

SYDNEY — Artisans and those involved in the retail of craft are invited to the a conference on growing a creative economy later this month.

The conference, which will focus on creativity, collaboration and change, takes place April 1416 in Sydney at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion.

On April 14, Craft Injection focuses on creative business development, entrepreneurship, and the promotion and marketing of craft.

Jonathon Wayne, an ambassador from Etsy Canada, will host a workshop for craft producers that highlights the importance of selling beyond our borders and the opportunities that exist to sell through online retail stores.

Jaeny Baik, a former reporter and TV host for CBC, will emphasize the significance of online video and how craft producers can tell their stories while promoting their work and expertise through this medium.

“For the first time ever, video has become a democratic medium,” Baik said in a news release. “We can record a video on our cellphone, instantly upload it to YouTube and anyone from around the world can watch it. You can learn how to be great on video, as your authentic self. Once you know that, the potential to connect to bigger markets and customers around the world through web video is exponential.”

John Morris will discuss Square, a new technology that artisans and craft producers can use to take instantaneous payment via credit cards wherever they are. The keynote speaker will be Sarah Richardson, award-winning designer and host of Real Potential on HGTV.

“Craft Injection offers those involved in the production and retail of craft access to game changers in the world of design, marketing, and promotion of craft,” said Lori Burke, executive director of Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design. “Once again this year, the conference provides small businesses with the opportunity to meet with world class speakers and learn new skills to grow their businesses.”
