Mi’kmaq poet to read from new collection
SYDNEY — The Cabot Trail Writers Festival will kick off its sixth year in May with a special reading by a Nova Scotia poet.
The event, being presented in conjunction with Gaspereau Press, will feature Shalan Joudry reading from her new book "Generations Re-merging," May 10 at 2 p.m. at The Herring Choker Deli in Nyanza.
Joudry is a writer, performance artist and storyteller whose poetry has appeared in "The Nashwaak Review" and "Mi’kmaq Anthology II."
She works as a cultural interpreter and community ecologist at Bear River First Nation, N.S. where she lives with her two daughters.
A collection of poems, "Generations Re-merging" is Joudry’s first book. It is described as an exploration of the complex tangle of intergenerational relationships and cultural issues encountered by a Mi’kmaq woman in the modern world.
The Cabot Trail Writers Festival is held each fall in North River, Victoria County, but organizers also host several satellite events in the area throughout the year.
