GLACE BAY — A woman was arrested and a man transported to hospital, following a stabbing in Glace Bay Friday.

Cape Breton Regional Police said were called to 335 Newton Street at about 1:30 p.m. following a report of a stabbing. A male was transported to hospital by EHS for treatment of his injuries and a female suspect was arrested. Police say the victim and suspect — both in their 20s — are known to each other.

Mid-afternoon on Friday, a group of international students from China were found huddled together on the sidewalk in front of the house in question, concerned over reports their roommate had been stabbed.

“Of course we’re concerned, we live in there,” said one student who wished not to be identified.

“We don’t know what happened yet, only that our roommate was hurt,” he added.

The student said six of them — all from China — rented the house together. The students, who attend the International Centre for English Academic Preparation in Glace Bay, weren’t home when the stabbing occurred.

“We heard about it in school, our teacher told us,” he said.

He said the roommate’s girlfriend — also of China — lived in the house as well. He said the couple did argue some, but he added that most couples do.

“We have to find out what stuff happened and consider whether we have to move or not.”

Waiting patiently outside, the students said they were cold and didn’t have anywhere else to go.

“We want to go inside and check things, to see if anything is broken,” another one added.

Staff Sgt. Kevin Dowe said as of 6:30 p.m. Friday the man remained in hospital and the woman was still in custody. The house remained cordoned off by police.

“To maintain continuity for a possible search warrant,” Dowe said. “Part of the investigation process.”

He said as of early evening Friday, no one had been charged.

“There’s interviews and statements being taken. At this time it’s still under investigation.”

Mary McNeil, who lives nearby, said four or five police cars were at the scene earlier in the day.

“I don’t know what happened, but there sure were a lot of police there. “

She said there are many international students living in the area.

“They are always friendly and quiet, never cause any problems.”
