Way to Wellness program to be held in Whitney Pier, Louisbourg
SYDNEY — Registration is underway for two free six-week courses that help people with chronic health conditions lead healthier lives.
Your Way to Wellness program teaches people how to live with chronic health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, fibromyalgia and mild depression.
This program is being offered in Whitney Pier and in Louisbourg.
In the Pier, it will take place at Menelik Hall from 1:30-4 p.m. beginning Tuesday.
In Louisbourg, the program will be held from 1:30-4 p.m. beginning March 23 at the fire hall.
Participants will obtain information, learn skills and abilities, learn problem solving strategies and gain confidence in their ability to manage and cope with their chronic condition. Participants give and receive support from others who are experiencing similar health concerns.
At the end of each six-week session participants are asked to submit an evaluation.
“Participants have told me that the sessions have helped them to return to many activities they stopped because of their chronic condition,” said Kelly MacIsaac, Your Way to Wellness co-ordina- tor, in a press release. “They experience more self-confidence when they are dealing with their chronic condition and feel better about their ability to self-manage.”
The course, designed for groups of 10 to 15 people, runs two and a half hours per week for six consecutive weeks. Sessions are led by trained volunteers, most of who live with chronic conditions themselves.
Spouses, family, friends, relatives, and neighbours are all welcome to attend.
