Alexandra ‘Sandy’ Laurie Young

We, the family, regret to announce the passing of Sandy Young, 64, of New Waterford on Feb. 18, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Alex and Elza (Aitkens) Gillis.

She was a member of the former Mount Carmel parish, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard.

For many years she worked at New Waterford Consolidat­ed Hospital as a switchboar­d operator. Sandy would eventually move on with her husband to start their career as owners of the House of Plenty store and later, operating the Irving Service Centre in New Waterford.

She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Joe; one son, Craig (Karen), New Victoria; one daughter, Jill (Kolin) Bentley, Alberta; four grandchild­ren who were her pride and joy, Taylor, Hunter, Koral and Alaya. Sandy is also survived by her mother-inlaw, Freda; nieces, nephew, extended family and friends.

Besides her parents, Sandy was predecease­d by her son Ryan, brother, Ronnie and father-inlaw, Joe.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivra­y Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.

A funeral mass of celebratio­n will take place Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiatin­g. A luncheon will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford.

Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. The Knights of Columbus will assemble for a prayer service at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the Funeral Home.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
