It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Sylva Joseph Lirette, 74, on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Hay Cove, Sylva was the son of the late Edgar and Regina (Collet) Lirette.

Sylva was a gentle, kind, and loving man, who enjoyed spending time with his wife and family. He worked at Chrysler Canada in Streetsvil­le, Ont., for 30 years before retiring back to Cape Breton. He enjoyed the Blue Jays, Montreal Canadiens, and a great game of horseshoes. Sylva will be remembered by his family and friends for always being there for them, and making each and every one, feel special.

Sylva is survived by his loving wife of 53 years of marriage, Lillian, Sydney; son, Jamie (Klara), Ont., and two loving grandchild­ren, Korben and Calista. He is also leaves behind his brothers, Johnnie (Norma) and Edmund, both from Ont.; sisters, Theresa, Ont., Mary (Johnny), Ont., Emma (Oscar), Ont., Judy ‘Tootsie’ (Donnie), Pictou, Patricia (Helen), England, and Judy, Ont.; nieces, Trena (Rex) and Lillyann (Joey), both from Sydney; greatniece­s and greatnephe­ws, Chantelle, Cole, Tegan and Joshua; as well as many more nieces and nephews from Sydney and London, Ont.

Besides his parents, Sylva was predecease­d by his sisters, Ruthy, Pauline and brothers, Pius, Freddie and Alphonse ‘Dickie’.

At Sylva’s request cremation has taken place. Visitation for the late Sylva Joseph Lirette will be held today (Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015) at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 6-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 27, 2015 at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiatin­g. Interment will take place in Resurrecti­on Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sylva may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Breton, Whitney Pier.

Funeral arrangemen­ts are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
