Marine Atlantic job fair attracts hundreds
Ferry service hiring 95 assistant stewards
Two hours into a four-hour Marine Atlantic job fair, close to 200 job seekers had come through the doors Thursday.
The fair, held at the YMCA Career and Employment Resource Centre on Charlotte Street in Sydney, is part of Marine Atlantic’s recruiting efforts for the 2016 summer season.
This year in particular, the ferry service will be hiring 95 assistant stewards, who clean and maintain cabins and public areas on board the ferries, work in food services and provide customer service to passengers.
“It is a large number,” said Dan Tobin, human resources manager with Marine Atlantic. “And we wanted to reach out to as many people as we can. We’ve got a fantastic group of employees right now and we’re looking to build upon that team.”
Tobin said new assistant stewards are hired each year, with the number of hires being dependent on how many people retire or leave the company in a given year. And in addition to assistant stewards, Tobin said there’s always other positions coming up within the corporation — from engineers, to ticketing and reservation agents, to stevedores.
Tobin said he was pleased to see so many people coming out to the job fair, noting there was a line up even before the event got underway.
“I’ve spoken to hundreds of people here this morning,” he said. “It’s fantastic. There was certainly a great, positive group that showed up here today and some great questions from some great people.”
Tobin said Marine Atlantic will also be hosting job fairs in Newfoundland in the weeks ahead.
There are currently approximately 1,400 people employed by Marine Atlantic.
