Cape Breton hosting Christmas parades this weekend

- BY CAPE BRETON POST STAFF

Santa Claus is coming to several towns in Cape Breton this weekend.

The Sydney Santa Claus Parade will take place today, beginning at 6 p.m. Participants will meet at Open Hearth Park at 4:30 p.m. and will be lined up in order soon afterward.

The parade will depart Open Hearth Park on Ferry Street, turn left onto George Street, left onto Prince Street, then left onto Disco Street, left onto Victoria Road, and right onto Jameson Street to disburse. Award winners will be announced via the Cape Breton Post and the CBRM Official site Facebook page.

Traffic is expected to be busy in downtown Sydney this evening, as the Screaming Eagles will also play at Centre 200, taking on the Quebec Remparts.

As has become a tradition, Coats for Kids will be collected during the annual Sydney Santa Claus parade and delivered to organizations in the community for distribution to children and families in need. Last year, more than 1,800 coats were collected by volunteers.

The Baddeck Christmas parade will take place at 1 p.m. today. Those participating in the parade will meet up at the Alexander Graham Bell Museum. The parade will then travel from the museum, up Chebuctor Street, turn left at Bethune’s Corner, then left again onto Lower Twining Street and along Water Street up to Chebucto Street and return to the museum.

Port Hawkesbury’s fourth annual Christmas parade will go ahead at 6 p.m., today. Starting from the Provincial Building parking lot, it will travel past the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home on MacQuarrie Drive Extension to Reeves Street, down Old Sydney Road onto Queen Street then onto Prince to MacSween Street, and ending back at the Provincial Building.

New Waterford will host its Santa Claus parade Sunday at 6 p.m. There are 30 to 40 floats registered for the parade. The parade will be starting at the Community Press office instead of the KOC, due to the Chase the Ace game at the KOC Sunday night. It will then follow its regular route around town — up King Street, across Emerald Street, down Mahon Street and across Plummer Avenue to the New Waterford fire hall for refreshments and an awards ceremony.
