HOWELL (Gillis), Mary Margaret ‘Peggy’

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmothe­r and greatgrand­mother, Peggy Howell, 90, on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, An Cala Unit, surrounded by her loving family.

Peggy was born on Sept. 23, 1925, in New Waterford. She was the daughter of the late John A. and Mary (MacFarlane) Gillis from Margaree Harbour.

Peggy loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchild­ren and great-grandchild­ren. She spent many summers in Northside East Bay, where she was known as ‘Aunt Peggy’ by many children. She was often the first to brave the cold waters for the first swim in the spring.

Peggy had a great faith and was a member of the CWL in Holy Redeemer Parish. She was also a former religious education teacher, a Eucharisti­c Minister, and Pastoral Care worker within the parish. She also had volunteere­d at the Loaves and Fishes program which was in former Holy Redeemer Parish Hall.

Peggy is survived by sons, Frank (Linda) and Joe (Lila); daughters, Beverly (Wayne) Morrison, Yvonne (Paul) Madore, Patricia (Rick) Alisch and Jacqueline ( Jamie) Clarke; son-in-law, Alvin Gallant; one sister, Rose LeBlanc; brother-inlaw, William; grandchild­ren, Frank, Illona, Jeannine, Alicia, Linda, Mike, Chris, Nick, Natasha, Blaire, Caitlyn, Mackenzie, Ben, Cameron and great-grandchild­ren, Nora, Cole and Max.

Besides her parents, Peggy was predecease­d by her husband, Henry; daughter, Madonna Gallant; brothers, Joseph, John, Hugh, Myles, and Alexander; sisters, Tina Campbell, Rita Heffernan, Sister Mary Lydia Gillis and Sister Grace Virginia Gillis, both formerly from Sisters of Charity and also John Harold and Mary Margaret in infancy.

Visitation for the late Peggy Howell will be held on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015 at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, Nov. 30, 2015 at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiatin­g. Following the mass a reception will be provided by the CWL in the lower level of church. Interment will take place in Resurrecti­on Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of Peggy may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.

Funeral arrangemen­ts are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family of Eddie, regret to announce his passing on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015 at Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.

Eddie was born in Bras d’Or on Dec. 6, 1935 to the late Frank and Marion (O’Handley) Reashore. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Emma (Boudreau) for 52 years. Loving father to Helene (Blair Dove) and Clair (Kathy). Proud poppy to Katie Reashore, whom he adored. He is also survived by his sisters, Greta (Percy) MacKenzie, George’s River and Theresa Bounsall, Scarboroug­h and brother, Elmer (Ester), St. Catharines, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predecease­d by his siblings Maggie, Clara, Eileen, Danny, Joe, Bill, Ritchie, Leo and Butch.

Eddie sailed the Great Lakes from 1953-1967. He retired from Marine Atlantic in 2001 after 34 years of service. Eddie was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or and a member of Bras d’Or Senior’s and Pensioner’s Club. He was a jack of all trades and was always willing to help others. He enjoyed travelling, fishing, hunting and playing crib. Christmas was Eddie’s favourite time of year, he would spend many days setting up his Christmas Village under the tree. He also enjoyed the annual Easter Egg Hunt with his granddaugh­ter.

There will be no visitation by request. A celebratio­n of Eddie’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Peter McLeod officiatin­g. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery, Bras d’Or.

Funeral arrangemen­ts are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Cemetery or Bras d’Or Hall New Roof Fund.
