Going the distance

Cape Breton’s Corey Deveaux wins Melmerby Triathlon.

Completing an Olympic distance triathlon is no small feat, but for Corey Deveaux, it’s only a quarter of what he’s used to swimming, biking and running.

The Sydney River athlete was the winner in his distance at the Melmerby Triathlon on Sunday at a time of 2:03:22 – just one year after he came in first at the Ironman in Lake Placid, N.Y. out of 2,800 participants, completing the 3.8-kilometre swim, 180-kilometre bike ride and 42.2-kilometre marathon in 9:31:09.

He trains 15 to 20 hours a week, fitting in two to three hour bike rides before work or swims and running in the evening – receiving training from his coach in Belgium.

“It’s busy, but it’s my lifestyle, so it’s no different than going home and watching a movie,” the 32-year-old said.

Sunday was Deveaux’s first time at the Johnny Miles event, having started triathlon in 2011.
