Wow! We have a new outlet in North Sydney in the form of a fish market owned by Jim and Mike Gillis, and the fish is fresh, fresh.

We know because my wife, Evelyn, and I have purchased fish twice and it is nothing short of excellent quality.

This year, Gillis Seafood is celebrating 70 years serving the public.

Gillis Seafood is a seafood wholesale company supplying sustainable quality seafood products to grocery chains, restaurants and institutions. They procure seafood from seafood companies all over Eastern Canada and supply customers throughout the Atlantic Provinces. Their fleet of refrigerated trucks can be seen on the road anywhere in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

The business employs 12 people. Some of the key employees are Mike Gillis, vicepresident, George Andrea, general manager, Lana Rudderham, Office Manager, and Jason Cooke, warehouse manager/quality control manager. Martina Caldwell, another Gillis family member, is also involved in the business since her childhood days.

Donald B. Gillis started the company in 1946, working out of his homestead on Seaview Drive in Upper North Sydney. Jim Gillis worked with his father for many years and then, in 1996, took over the operation of the business.

In 2007, as president of the company, Jim purchased a building in the Northside Industrial Park and moved the business downtown. It is a modern federally inspected (CFIA) distribution centre that can facilitate their dayto-day operations.

Mike Gillis started working in the business at age 16, and will eventually take over the business from his father.

The latest venture is the opening of the new fish market. The fish market is located next door to the distribution centre and opened its doors on July 5.

The fish market has a steady supply of fresh haddock, cod, sole, hake, salmon, halibut, tuna, swordfish, scallops, mussels, clams, oysters, crab, and various types of smoked and salted fish, mackerel, smelts, cod tongues, trout and live lobster. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and offers weekly specials.

Gillis Seafood and the Fish Market are located at 48 Memorial Drive in the Northside Industrial Park. You can contact Gillis Seafood or the Fish Market at 902-794-7426, or www.gillisseafood.com
