Letter an attack against LBGTQ community

-

I read John Lyons letter to the editor (‘Will parade marching pay off at the polls?’, Cape Breton Post, July 18). In fact, I read it three times just to be sure that I understood it the way he meant it to be understood.

Suffice to say that we are all entitled to our views and beliefs. However, in my opinion, this letter is no less than an attack against the LBGTQ community and some may even consider it a homophobic slur (albeit very well hidden in a political context).

I believe that what Lyons and others should realize is that they are not the “silent intimidated majority.” In fact, they are so far in the minority that they are barely noticed.

As for President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau they are both fathers of young impressionable boys and girls and are clearly willing to set an example of goodness for them, as well as for the rest of the nations.

And thank the Lord they have the courage to do so. Otherwise they may foster attitudes in their own children and the nations they govern similar to Lyons – and frankly that is a very scary thought. It is exactly these types of attitudes that perpetuate discrimination, hate and the like across the globe and many quote or hide behind the Bible as their justification as Mr. Lyons has done too many times.

If Lyons or anyone reading this article believes in a ‘Higher Power’ that would actually support these sorts of attitudes toward each other than they really should fire that “God” and look for one that stands for love, acceptance and the like.

Further, I don’t know Mt. Lyons from Adam but I would suggest he spend some time educating himself in the social sciences and getting to know personally the many great people in the LBGTQ community. Maybe this would enlighten him and lead to a more accepting attitude.

And, on that note, perhaps the Cape Breton Post could be a little more selective in the types of letters they do publish, given that they have the power to choose. Craig Boudreau Sydney
