Gerry ‘Soup’ Newell, 79, of Franklin, died July 1st, in the Medway Country Manor. He was the husband of Mary C. (Milley) Newell, with whom he would have been married to for 60 years this month. Born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, N.S., March 22, 1937, the son of the late Jordan and Myrtle (Morrison) Newell, Mr. Newell was raised in Glace Bay and had lived in Franklin since 1961. Gerry had been a deliveryma­n for Keigan Chevrolet in Franklin for several years. He had previously worked as a machine operator for the Denison Corporatio­n and prior to that he had been a coal miner in # 20 Colliery, Glace Bay for 11 years with Dominion Coal Company. Gerry was an avid fan of the New England Patriots, the Boston Bruins and enjoyed camping and boating. He was proud of always having his car in spotless condition. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Gerald E. Newell, of Douglas, Allan E. Newell (Patricia), Cumberland, R.I. and Joseph W. Newell and his fiancé Kris, Franklin. He is also survived by his brothers, Andy Newell (Marilyn), Glace Bay and Allan Newell (Dorothy), London, Ont. Gerry is also survived by his granddaugh­ters, Cassandra and Christina Newell. He was the uncle of the late Myrtle Ann Newell. His funeral service was held in Franklin, MA.
