Latest scoop on Tasty Treat

Iconic ice cream shop to be rebuilt, others to remain open

One of Cape Breton’s favourite landmarks disappeared under the wrecker’s ball last week but have no fear — another ice cream shop should soon be opening in the former Tasty Treat Howie Centre location.

That’s according to Betty Dezagiacomo-MacIsaac, one of four family members who have owned the iconic ice cream and hamburger shops for 58 years.

“It was sad to see it go,” she says but adds fans won’t have to go for long without their favourite ice cream. The other two Tasty Treat locations have reopened for the season and the new shop will feature the same menu.

Dezagiacomo-MacIsaac says the family members decided to sell the Howie Centre location last spring to Jimmy Kennedy of Louisbourg Seafoods. The Grand Lake Road and Keltic Drive Tasty Treat locations still belong to the Dezagiacomo family members and will remain open, but they’re also for sale.

“My parents looked after it until they were in their 80s but I don’t think we will be,” said Dezagiacomo-MacIsaac who is 67. Her brothers and sister range in age from 64 to 75. “We’re getting up there.”

As far as she knows, the Howie Centre location will feature the newly rebuilt ice cream shop and a separate fish market. The ice cream store will feature the same menu as the previous Tasty Treat and the same staff serving up the treats.

Dezagiacomo-MacIsaac expects the new location to reopen later this spring.

“Many people see the opening of our shops as one of the first signs of spring. I think they did a survey years ago about the first signs of spring in Nova Scotia and the Tasty Treat opening, I think we topped it.”

?? CAPE BRETON POST ?? The remaining Tasty Treat shops, this one on Keltic Drive and the other on Grand Lake Road, have already reopened for the season.
