It is with sadness we announce the passing of Vera Atkinson on March 17, 2017 in her 100th year.

Vera was born July 18, 1917; she was the daughter of the late Tom and Pearl Galliott. She is survived by her daughters, Donna Ferguson and Linda (Dave) Hillier; son, Kent (Marion) Atkinson; along with 8 grandchild­ren and 16 great grandchild­ren who she was a great part of their lives.

Besides her parents, Mom was predecease­d by her loving husband, Allan in 2001; great grandson, Nathan Hillier; sister, Eva Grant; brothers, Fred and Gerald and son-in-law, Norman Ferguson.

Vera chose nursing as her career and while doing so became a Registered Nurse. She took up Painting at the age of 65 and created many very beautiful works of art. At the age of 72 she took up driving and travelled with Dad most of the roads on this beautiful Island.

She was a member of Jubilee Rebekah Lodge No.14 which she thoroughly enjoyed going to the meetings and sharing in the fellowship of that order, she was a member of the Glace Bay General Hospital Alumni, the Glace Bay Art Associatio­n. In earlier years she was a member of a Bridge Club which she enjoyed very much. Vera was a member of Epworth United Church until its closing and then she transferre­d to Knox United Church in Glace Bay. She spent the past months residing in Seaview Manor. Thanks to the staff on 4th floor Glace Bay Hospital and Seaview Manor for the wonderful care they gave her.

Visitation for Vera will be held on Monday March 20, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St, Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 21 at 2 p.m. in Knox United Church Glace Bay following a Rebekah service.

Donations in Vera’s memory can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
