Pu’tus Victor Bosco Alex, 82 years old of Eskasoni passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, March 16, 2017.

Born July 22, 1934 in Barra Head, Chapel Island he was the son of the late Pu’tus Isaac and Esther (Paul) Alex.

He was a member of the Holy Family parish. Victor was a member of the Mi’Kmaq Grand Council as a ‘Pu’tus’, a spiritual leader and keeper of the treaties of the Mi’Kmaq Nation. He was a devoted follower for the St. Anne Mission held in Chapel Island. He also travelled to St. Anne d’ Beaupre for many years, something he looked forward to every year. For his past times he enjoyed going to bingo, playing the VLT’s and cards with his family.

He is survived by his children, three daughters, Sandra Gloade, Donna (Charles Sylliboy) and Victoria; eight sons, Danny, Victor Jr., Randolph (Randy), Leon, Alex, Melvin John, Leon Robert and Byron; 30 grandchild­ren; 49 great grandchild­ren; brother, Cammailus Alex; five godchildre­n, Charlotte Ann Young, Carol Marshall, Peggy Dennis, Sam Francis and Sarah Sark. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Victor was predecease­d by his wife, Leona Alex; his infant son, Melvin John; two grandchild­ren; two great grandchild­ren; one sister, Jane ‘Bonnie’ Alex and one brother, George Alex.

Visitation for the late Pu’tus Victor Alex will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21 at the Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 23 at Holy Family Church, Eskasoni, Rev Martin MacDougall will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
