The Glace Bay Miners scored early and often on their way to a 6-1 win over the Cape Breton West Islanders in Nova Scotia Bantam ‘AA’ Provincial Championships action at the Bayplex on Friday.

The win improved the host Miners’ record to 2-1, after the team dropped a 5-3 decision to the Cole Harbour Red Wings earlier in the day on Friday.

Meanwhile, for the Islanders, the loss dropped their record to 0-4 at the tournament, after losses to Acadia and Yarmouth on Thursday as well as Sydney on Friday morning.

Glace Bay opened the scoring 28 seconds into the game with Matthew MacIntosh firing a shot past Cape Breton West’s Chase MacPherson. David Beaton made the score 2-0 for the Miners before the first stanza was complete.

The Miners continued to fill the net in the second period with a pair of goals from MacIntosh to complete the hat trick and a single marker by Liam Peterson.

Beaton extended the Glace Bay lead in the third period with a goal at 4:04 of the final frame, before Keith MacDonnell would break the shutout bid for Glace Bay’s Colton Boutilier at 3:56.

Boutilier picked up the win between the pipes for Glace Bay. MacPherson was replaced in the second period by Dominic Keigan, but was tagged with the loss.

In other action at the tournament, the Sydney Steelers improved their second to 2-1 with a 3-1 win over Chebucto Atlantics on Friday. Earlier in the day, the Steelers defeated Cape Breton West 6-3.

The provincial tournament continues today with three games on schedule including the Glace Bay Miners playing the Sydney Steelers at noon, all games at the Bayplex.
