JOURNEY OF THE CROSS
Annual event in North Sydney set for Good Friday.
The 15th annual Journey to the Cross will be held on Good Friday.
The walk begins at noon from St. Matthew Wesley United Church, Peppett Street, North Sydney.
Christians of multiple denominations will come together to re-enact Jesus Christ’s walk with the cross before his crucifixion.
The re-enactment includes readings that pertain to Judas Iscariot, Peter, Caiaphas, Pilate, the criminal and a 21st century Christian.
Along with the tradition of hammering a nail to the cross, representatives of each church take turns reading Scripture and a narrative, along with a prayer.
All ages are welcome to walk with the readers and those who are carrying the cross, as the procession makes its way through the streets.
“This event is very popular with the people of our churches. It’s making a public statement that this is not just a Friday, it’s Good Friday and we wanted to draw everyone’s attention that it’s not just a holiday, it’s a holy day,” said Rev. Ritchie Robinson of St. Giles Presbyterian Church. “The event is unique in that it serves as a very visible reminder to the wider community of the day’s importance.”
In past years the event has attracted upwards of 100 people and continues to grow in popularity each year.
“There are five churches involved. But it’s public and anyone is welcome to come along.”
The walk will take approximately an hour, and will end at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Archibald Avenue.
From there participants are welcome to continue on to branch 19 Royal Canadian Legion for a light lunch and refreshments.
