Co-founder of local funeral home dead at age 92
The co-founder of Filmore & Whitman Funeral Home, Paul Whitman, is being remembered with a book of condolences.
Whitman, 92, died April 4 in Kentville.
The book of condolences is available to sign at the funeral home for anyone who wants to offer their condolences to the Whitman family.
Whitman was the managing director at Fillmore & Whitman from 1952-82.
“He still has ties with the local community,” said Andrew Chapman, general manager of Dignity Memorial for all the Cape Breton locations that includes Filmore & Whitman in Sydney Mines.
“We will have the book available until Saturday when it will be forwarded on to the family in Middleton.
“There are still a lot of families that remember Paul Whitman and this is a way to give them an opportunity to pass on their condolences to the family. ”
During 30 years in Sydney Mines, Whitman was a member of Clyde Avenue Baptist Church where he served as a trustee and member of the board of managers.
As well as his interest and contribution to the funeral service industry in varying capacities, Whitman was secretary treasurer of Brookside Cemetery in Sydney Mines for 25 years, president of the Rotary Club of Sydney Mines, a member of the North Sydney Rotary Club, president of the Sydney Mines Board of Trade, chairman of the Sydney Mines Zone of the Cape Breton County United Appeal, president of the Northside Branch Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society, president of what is now known as the Canadian Association for Community Living and was a trustee of the British Canadian Co-op Society.
In 1982, he retired, moved to Kentville and for 10 years was associated on a part-time basis with H.C. Lindsay Funeral Homes.
A funeral service and reception were held Saturday at the Berwick Baptist Church.
