Volunteers were celebrated during Tuesday’s Cape Breton Regional Municipality council session.

The event saw Melanie Magliaro, a graduating student from Sydney Academy, presented with the 2017 Youth Volunteer Award, recognizing her as an outstanding youth volunteer.

Magliaro has been a community volunteer since she was 12, contributing to organizations such as Schools Plus, Children’s Wish Foundation and the SPCA.

She is also a mentor and role model to youth in the CBRM.

The Tuesday Night Squirts Hockey Program was recognized in the CBRM’s outstanding community group or project category.

The program was represented by Glen Joseph who accepted the 2017 Gary McDonald Memorial Award.

The squirts program has been offered in the community for more than 40 years, playing the role of introducing thousands of community youth to the sport of hockey.

The program is completely run by volunteers and teaches the fundamentals of team building, camaraderie and fun.

Mike Kelloway was named the recipient of the 2017 Anne Holland Memorial Award, recognizing him as an outstanding community volunteer.

Since the 1990s, Kelloway has made it his work to better the community through volunteering, according to a CBRM news release.

Whether it was for youth at the Glace Bay Youth Centre or the Whitney Pier Youth Club or for his most recent work with BayItForward.

He is said to have shown a dedication to engaging community organizations and working tirelessly to keep their doors open.

The CBRM Special Volunteer Awards are awarded each April to individuals and groups that display outstanding volunteer contributions to the CBRM community.

Award nominations are accepted year-round. The nomination form can be found at www.cbrm.ns.ca/volunteer.html or by calling CBRM recreation at 902 563-5510.
