Getting ready

Planning begins for August festival

The planning has begun for the 2017 Sydney Waterfront Festival set to run August 2-6.

Like past years, the festival features traditional favourites such as the teddy bear picnic, the night light parade, mini Olympics, and kidspree presented by Sydney Credit Union.

There will also be busker performances, live music and fireworks to round out the jampacked five-day festival.

Michelle Wilson, a co-ordinator of the event, said during the five-day event there would be something new that’s not completely related to the event.

“The tall ships are coming that weekend in conjunction with our festival so that will be a really exciting addition to this years festival.”

One of the highlights of the festival, the night light parade, will be taking place on Thursday, August 3 with this year’s theme: Celebrating Canada’s 150th Birthday.

During the annual street festival on Saturday, August 5, local vendors and food trucks are invited to participate in the sidewalk sale on Charlotte St. from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Also on Aug. 5, Pride will be hosting a celebration in Open Hearth Park from 1-3 p.m.

If you are interested in promoting your community event in the Sydney Waterfront Festival brochure there is a link posted on the Facebook page: Sydney Waterfront District. Your event must take place between Friday, July 28 and Sunday, August 6. Deadline for submissions is June 26.

Volunteers will also be needed for various events during the festival. If you are interesting in volunteering, email sydneywaterfrontfest@gmail.com.
