BURKE, Catherine

Glace Bay

-

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Catherine (Tiny)

Burke, age 85, on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay.

Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Ned and Peggy (MacLeod) O’Donnell. Catherine enjoyed life surrounded by family and friends. She will be long remembered for her sense of humor and quick wit. If Tiny was in a room there was sure to be laughter. She had a way with words and loved to tease those she held dearest. It was our pleasure to listen to nana share jokes and stories. At the end of every visit, she would say ‘keep your eyes open’. Now we ask that of her, to keep her eyes open and watch out for us.

Outside of the home, Catherine worked at Hopkins Fish Plant and volunteered for many years at the Army and Navy in Glace Bay where she made many friends. She will be sadly missed by close friends, Sonny and Wilfred and Elvina.

Catherine is survived by her two sons, Robert (Noel), Howard (Charlene); three daughters, Mary, Margaret (John) and Marie (Bomber); her seven adoring grandchildren and two great -grandchildren. She is also survived by brother, Allie O’Donnell; sister, Georgina McInnis, and sisters-in-law, Beverly and Elsie O’Donnell.

Beside her parents, she was predeceased by the father of her children, Fred Burke; infant daughter, Ellen; brothers, Eddie, Tommy, Gary; sister, Florence Smiley.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday August 30, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The Funeral Mass, officiated by Fr. Anthony O’Connor, will be held on Thursday, August 31, at 10 a.m. in St Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Interment will follow in St. Anne’s Cemetery. A reception will take place in the church foyer.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the doctors and staff of the Seaview Manor for the kindness and care given to Catherine over the last few years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the
