Panthers, Wildcats battle to draw

Riverview girls remain unbeaten with win over Memorial

The host Sydney Academy Wildcats girls picked up their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw with the Glace Bay Panthers in Cape Breton High School Soccer League play Tuesday at Open Hearth Park turf.

Amy Lynch scored for the Wildcats, while Kassie MacKinnon replied for the Panthers.

Fourth-place Sydney Academy’s record improved to 0-3-1, while third-place Glace Bay sits at 1-1-1.

In Sydney Mines, the Riverview Reds girls moved to 4-0-0 on the season with a 6-0 win over the host Memorial Marauders.

Julia Currie scored two goals six minutes apart in the 26th and 32nd minutes to lead the first-place Reds. Emma Ferguson gave Riverview a 3-0 lead with a goal in the 40th minute.

In the second half, Kelly MacInnis (59th), Taylor Coleman (68th) and Maddie Coleman (70th) rounded out the attack.

In goal, Virginia Braggio posted the shutout. Memorial’s record fell to 0-5-0 with the setback.

The Riverview junior varsity girls (3-0-0) won their game by default over Eskasoni (0-2-0) on Tuesday.

Today, the Sydney Academy boys play Glace Bay at Open Hearth Park turf, while the Eskasoni boys play Memorial at Open Hearth Park grass field at 4:15 p.m. Memorial JV girls will host Eskasoni at Memorial field at 4:15 p.m.

In a doublehead­er at Veterans Memorial Field in New Waterford, the Riverview girls will play the Breton Education Centre Bears at 6 p.m. in a battle of two undefeated teams, followed by the Reds and Bears boys at 8 p.m.
