Sooners aiming for title on road this weekend

‘It’s not going to come easy, we realize that they’re as tough to beat on their home turf as we are on ours’

The Sydney Sooners can walk away with the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League championship this weekend if they can subdue the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry on their home field.

Sydney has a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven championship series after winning both of their home games at the Susan McEachern Memorial Ball Field in Sydney last weekend.

Sooners manager Jim (Rico) McEachern said the first two games were so close that they could have gone either way.

“I’m impressed with the results and the fact that they’re a tough team — with the great pitching they have – and we were able to match it,” said McEachern. “Really, we were fortunate to come out with the wins we had, we could have easily been 0-2, that’s how close the games were.”

In Game 1, the Sooners came out with a 4-3 win on Saturday to start the series and then eked out a 1-0 win in Sunday’s Game 2 matchup.

This weekend, the next three games in the series (Game 5 if needed) are scheduled for Dartmouth’s Beazley Field, on Friday and Saturday.

McEachern noted that it will be a challenge for Sydney to come up with the two wins they need to clinch the NSSBL title in

Dartmouth.

“Dartmouth is such a strong team with such strong pitching that when you break it down game to game, to win a game will be our objective and to win two games will be our ultimate objective,” said McEachern.

“It’s not going to come easy, we realize that they’re as tough to beat on their home turf as we are on ours, so we have to try and find a way to nullify that advantage for the next three games.”

At Dartmouth’s Beazley Field this weekend, game 3 starts Friday at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday’s Game 4 is scheduled for 2 p.m.

If necessary, Game 5 will also be on Saturday, with 7 p.m. as the start time.
