Women Capers to play for AUS title on Sunday
The Cape Breton University Capers women’s soccer team is headed to the Atlantic University Sport championship game on Sunday.
The Capers blanked the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds 4-0 in the Subway AUS Women’s Soccer Championship at Oland Stadium in Antigonish on Friday.
“Playoff games are tight, you never know how it’s going to go because everyone is facing their last game of the year, should they lose,” said Capers coach Ness Timmons. “We felt we carried the play and we had our chances and knew it was going to come. It took a while to get our second goal, but we stayed patient.”
Cape Breton took a 1-0 lead into halftime with Tamara Brown firing home a Keona Simmonds pass at the 25-minute mark.
The Capers added to their lead in the 62nd minute with Brown netting her second goal of the game, before Amelia Carlini added an insurance goal in the 77th minute.
Brown completed the hattrick with her third goal of the game, giving the Capers a 4-0 lead less then a minute later.
Timmons said the team plans to stick to the same game plan as Friday entering Sunday’s final.
“We concentrate on the back end first to be safe and secure and up front we show a little more flare and creativity and we have the players that can do that,” he said. “We will try to play a possession type game, but we’re always ready to go in transition.”
In the other semifinal game on Friday, the No. 4 seed Acadia University Axewomen upset the Memorial University Sea-Hawks 1-0 on penalty kicks.
The Capers will now play the Axewomen in the Atlantic University Sport championship game at 2 p.m. at Oland Stadium on Sunday.
