War of the words

Take care with what you say to others

- Kevin Mattatal

Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Have you ever killed anything with your words? Have you ever used your words like a surgeon’s knife to sever the cord between you and a relationship, a friendship, or a marriage? Have you ever said something in the past that you now wish you never said?

I think we can all say that we have dropped a few word bombs hoping to prove our point. The trouble is being right is way too overrated when we will use wrong words trying to make a righteous point. If being right is your sole defense for using wrong words then you have no defense at all.

I can’t say we should only use sweet words because sweet words that are not truthful will leave a sour taste in your mouth. On the other hand truthful words that are void of any sweetness may be too bitter for anyone to swallow.

Proverbs 15:1-2 “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.”

Are you the type of person who thinks that you should be allowed to say whatever you want, to whoever you want, in whatever way you want, using whatever words you want? If you are then you are not wise enough to speak according to the knowledge that will bring peace and your only reward will be wrath.

If you don’t understand how powerful your words are, you could be your own worse enemy. It’s in knowing the truth about our words that helps us to choose our words wisely.

I have talked with people and quoted this verse to my mind. Psalm 141:3 “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.”

I didn’t want to offend anyone and the truth was without sweetness so silence was the loudest answer that I could give. I don’t mean that we should use silence as a weapon but silence as the proper loving answer. I also learned that my silence in the face of someone armed with loud battle words would lead to me walking away.

James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

Seldom does anyone ever ask for help in an area where they already feel successful. For me, this verse is my daily prayer because I know me and I know that I will not always have the wisest, kindest, heartfelt answer.

If you could use some Heavenly wisdom to help with earthly problems then why not receive the promise from this verse to help you? God promises to give you the wisdom that you lack for the cost of you being humble enough to ask.

You don’t have to lose more friendships or relationships over wrong words but you can walk in a new level of divine wisdom from God. You can speak the truth in love and if you do … your best days are yet to come.

Find a good church to attend where you can receive and achieve all the great hopes and dreams that the Lord has for you. God bless you all.
