Nuts about Christmas

Sydney Waterfront District starting Nutcracker Festival

- BY CHRISTIAN ROACH christian.roach@cbpost.com.

The Sydney Waterfront District Society is building on its creative unveiling of large nutcrackers last year with an entire festival that starts Dec. 1 with a number of events.

Michelle Wilson, executive director of the Sydney Waterfront District Society, said although last year the organization introduced three, ninefoot-tall nutcracker statues throughout downtown Sydney and had a tree lighting, they plan to turn it into a two-day festival.

“I’m hoping that we can raise enough sponsorship funds and hopefully get a couple more nutcrackers painted and all ready to go to add to the streets,” said Wilson, who had the idea to introduce the festival to promote her organization, local shopping and nostalgia for a simpler time with the help of the Sydney and Area Chamber of Commerce and local vendors.

“We’re doing a tree light- ing again and kind of adding a Saturday with a vendor village set up. We’ll have a tent set up, children’s activities and an entertainment stage,” said Wilson. Events start Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m. on Charlotte Street with a tree lighting ceremony.

Later in evening, Santa will be present to see children. They can drop their letter in Santa’s mailbox.

Wilson said the society is also using the festival to spread

joy for the less fortunate and promoting a good cause, while people in attendance enjoy a great time.

“We’re inviting people to bring a non-perishable food

items for Loaves and Fishes. There will be hot chocolate and treats, and local choirs performing.”

For the holiday season the nutcrackers will be on display

to add to the holiday festivities.
