EARTHQUAKE
On this date in 1929, an earthquake along the southern edge of the Grand Banks sent a 15-metre tidal wave onto Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula. The wall of water killed 27 people and did $2 million in damage. In Cape Breton, damage due to earthquake vibrations damaged chimneys and some highways were blocked by minor landslides.

On Nov. 19, 1863, U.S. President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address as he dedicated a national cemetery at the site of the Civil War battlefield in Pennsylvania.
