CBU men’s basketball team wins its first two games of the season.

What a difference a day makes.

Just 24 hours after defeating Prince Edward Island by 53 points, the Cape Breton Capers needed a strong second half to break open a close game and claim a 90-78 win over the Panthers in Atlantic University Sport men’s basketball action on Sunday at CBU’s Sullivan Field House.

The victories improved the Capers’ record to 2-4 and kept the Panthers winless at 0-6. It’s also the first regularseason wins for the Capers men since the 2015-16 campaign. CBU failed to win a game last season.

Martin Campbell, who was on the floor for all but three minutes of the contest, netted 22 points to lead Cape Breton, while Aaron Hayes had 16 points and Indiana Rotondo chipped in with 13. Moshe Wadley and Dakelle Brooks each scored 17 points for UPEI.

On Saturday, the CBU men hardly seemed to miss as they romped to a 107-54 win that included no fewer than 15 threepoint baskets over the Panthers. Osman Omar was game’s high scorer with 29 points, while Brooks netted 11 points for the Panthers.

In women’s play, the Capers also needed a strong second half to dispatch a stubborn Prince Edward Island squad that was looking to avenge the 86-82 loss it suffered a day earlier. But with local players Hannah Brown and Alison Keough, who scored 23 and 21 points respectively, leading

the way Cape Breton rolled to an 88-77 win over the Panthers (2-4), whose Jenna Mae Ellsworth scored a game-high 26 points.

The win evened the Capers record at 3-3.

On Saturday, it was Marion Bridge’s Keough, with 24 points, and North Sydney’s Brown, with 22 points, that once again led the Capers attack. Truro’s Madison Munro chipped in with 15 points, while Ellsworth was the top UPEI shooter with

21 points.

With end of term exams fast approaching, the two CBU hoops teams will play their final game of the calendar this coming Saturday when they travel to Antigonish to take on St. Francis Xavier. The X-Men are 1-4, while the X-Women (0-6) are still seeking their first win of the season. Both games are four-point affairs.
