JETS FLYING HIGH

Jason Johnson scored a hat trick to propel the Cape Breton Jets to a 6-4 win over the Basin Armada in Bedford on Sunday in minor midget play. Ryan Chisholm, Nathaniel Fuller and Xavier Johnson also scored for Cape Breton. The Jets’ Andrew LeClair made 38 saves. On Saturday, the Jets (5-3-0-1) edged the Admirals 2-1 in Tantallon. Curtis Novak and Aiden Donovan scored for Cape Breton, while Jonathan Dolomont had 21 stops.

Panthers blank Marauders

The Glace Bay Panthers skated to a 5-0 win over the Memorial Marauders in high school play on Sunday. Panthers goalie Nick Bigley made 11 saves. Trenton Gove scored twice for Glace Bay with Dylan McDonald, Robbie Harroun and Devon Gouthro also getting on the score sheet. Memorial goalie Gavin Rudderham faced 33 shots.

Hockey showcase wraps up

The Monctonian ‘AAA’ tournament has wrapped up in Moncton with all three Cape Breton teams missing the playoffs. In the midget division, the Cape Breton West Islanders defeated Fredericto­n 7-1, but lost 3-1 to Bay Roberts, N.L. and 5-1 to the O.H.A. U18, while the Cape Breton Unionized Tradesmen lost to teams from Mississaug­a, 5-2, Charlottet­own, 4-1, and Corner Brook, 5-1. Dartmouth won the division. On the bantam side, the Joneljim Cougars dropped games to Moncton, 5-3, Bedford, 7-1, and Québec’s Séminaire Saint-Francois, 8-0. The Tantallon Gulls claimed the bantam crown.

Panthers drop pair

The MacIntyre Chevy Panthers lost a pair of female midget ‘AAA’ games during a weekend road trip. The Panthers were on the wrong end of a 1-0 score against Metro Boston Pizza on Saturday, while on Sunday, they suffered a 5-3 loss to the Pro Cresting Penguins. Leah Byrne, Alexa Poirier and Aimee O’Neill scored for the Panthers.
