It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our loving father, grandfathe­r and great grandfathe­r, Donald MacKenzie Morrison, on November 17, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Born in St. Ann’s, Victoria County, he was the son of the late Malcolm and Hughena (MacKenzie) Morrison.

Donald began his 40 year policing career with the city of Sydney Police Department at age 20. He would later join the CN Police Force advancing over the years, retiring as an Inspector. Although he would formally retire at age 60, Dad continued to demonstrat­e his passion for helping others and supporting his community, exhibited extensivel­y through his volunteer work.

As a member of Bethel Presbyteri­an Church, Dad was well known for his kindness and compassion toward others. He was extensivel­y involved in the church and volunteere­d countless hours with numerous charities and organizati­ons including The Children’s Wish Foundation, Shriners for Sick Children, Meals on Wheels and Big Brothers Big Sisters. He was a former president of the Sydney and District Little League and The Boys and Girls Clubs, and served on the Board of Directors for Hardwood Hill cemetery. He was a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge.

Dad was described by many as a true gentleman. He was an avid Leafs fan with an unforgivin­g sweet tooth and love of dogs, in particular his best bud Pawco. Regardless of the need, he was always there to provide love and support to his family of which he was extremely proud. He demonstrat­ed a gentle kindness in all that he did, exemplifyi­ng hard work, selflessne­ss, and a genuine concern for others.

Donald is survived by his daughter, Karen (Keith) Sharp, Toronto, ON; son, Malcolm, Sydney; brother, Jackie (Diane) MacEachern, Tarbot; grandchild­ren, Kyle, Courtney, Amanda (Chris) and Brittany (Matthew); great grandchild­ren, Isaac and Isla, and several nieces and nephews. He will also be sadly missed by his dear friend, Valerie Rhude.

Donald was predecease­d by his wife, Elsie (Hinkley); son, Hughie; daughter-in-law, Pamela Morrison; siblings, Annie Nicholson, Nora Ross and Angus Frank, as well as his best buddy, Pawco.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Harboursto­ne Enhanced Care, Steelworke­rs Lane for their care and compassion over this past year. It has been a great comfort knowing that Dad was well supported and cared for with the dignity and respect he himself, showed to so many over the course of his life. Our family will fondly remember his time there. We would also like to extend our thanks to Dr. John Archibald for his many years of profession­alism and care toward our father, and to the staff and volunteers at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit for supporting him and our family so completely.

Interment will be in Goose Cove Cemetery, St. Ann’s on November 21, 2017 at 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m. at Bethel Presbyteri­an Church, Sydney. with Rev. Bob Lyle officiatin­g; reception to follow in the church hall.
