The family of Gerald Murphy, regret to announce his passing on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Born on February 24, 1929 in South Bar, Cape Breton, Gerald was the son of the late Joseph and Sarah (Mac Neil) Murphy.

Gerald was a devoted member of St. Alphonsus Parish in Victoria Mines until its closing, after which he was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish.

Gerald was a fixture in South Bar, living there for his entire life farming, building things in his garage and enjoying life to the fullest, all while raising six children with his cherished partner in life Connie. If Gerald didn’t know how to build or fix something, he would just go ahead and figure out a way. He was never shy in providing advice to others or giving a helping hand to those whom he considered friends.

Gerald is survived by sons, Keith (Brenda), Courtenay, BC, Paul (Ann Marie), Edmonton, AB and Michael (Iris), South Bar; daughters, Anne Sullivan, Howie Centre and Karen MacIsaac (Roger), Amherst; sonin-law, Alan Sullivan, East Bay; grandchild­ren, Andrea and Marni Murphy, Erin, Doyle and Megan Murphy, Patrick Murphy, Krystal and Leah Anne Sullivan, Michael and Kelsey MacIsaac; great grandchild­ren, Lilly Locke and Chase Michael MacIsaac. Gerald is also survived by sisters, Mary Jane Pageot (Albert), London, ON, Michalene Simms (John Cullen), St. John’s, NL and Caroline Murphy, Toronto, ON, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Gerald was predecease­d by his wife, Connie; son, Kevin; sisters, Patsy MacDonald, Jeanette Pottle and Marilyn Murphy, and brother, Redmond.

Visitation for the late Gerald John Murphy will be held today (Monday, November 20, 2017) at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiatin­g. Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Victoria Mines.

Donations in memory of Gerald may be made to the Holy Redeemer Building Fund.

Funeral arrangemen­ts are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
