Ten reasons to celebrate in Sydney Waterfront District

-

As we approach the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, the Sydney Waterfront District regeneration committee would like to share some of many exciting initiatives that took place this summer with the community.

There were many to choose from, but we narrowed it down to 10. In no particular order, here are some of the highlights we think were worth celebrating:

• The expansion of a long-standing business, Governor’s, with their outdoor Beer Garden.

• The continuation of another successful season at our Highland Arts Theatre. It has helped to create a delightful ‘Art District’ within they Sydney Waterfront District.

• The third annual Sydney Credit Union Makin’ Waves Music Festival in Wentworth Park providedg a sense of place and community for residents and visitors over several weeks during the summer.

• Several businesses opened or expanded in the District such as Geebo Device Repair, El Jefe Mexican Restaurant, Cape Breton Fish and Marine Supply, Get Nauti Gift Shop, Krystle Luther Counselling, Cape Breton Proud Gift Shop and Thrive Counselling and Consulting.

• The opening of the Old Sydney Society museum on Charlotte St., bringing our history to the core of the city.

• The placement of a piano outside Doktor Luke’s – A Respectable Coffee Shop for all to play. It was a perfect addition with the location just a block away from the Highland Arts Theatre, making music accessible to any passers by.

• The commissioning of an aweinspiring underwater mural by a native Cape Bretoner on Charlotte St. This provided the inspiration to have a second ( General of the CBLA) and third one (four women from the HAT’s original production – Heart of Steel.)

• Coming with a splash was the Harbour Hopper which helped to share the rich history of the area with residents and tourists alike. It was quite an exciting spectacle as the amphibious vehicle drove through the city during September and October.

• Celebrations of the Sydney Waterfront Festival were a hit this past August with thousands of people attending the various events.

• Finally, the work done to complete the opening of the office for Sydney Waterfront District and the Regeneration Initiative.

The regeneration committee and its co-chairs, Janelle Osborne and Wesley Colford, are excited to see so much progress in our community over just a few months. Stay tuned for more successes moving forward.
