Food bank telethon raises $22,000 for those in need

-

Officials at the Glace Bay Food Bank say the public came through once again.

More than $22,000 was raised at the recent Jack Bonaparte Memorial Caring and Sharing telethon hosted by Seaside Communications.

“It’s been coming in steady since, people are honouring their pledges,” said Sandra MacPherson, a co-ordinator at the food bank. “It’s super and we’re so thankful to everybody who participated in the telethon, the performers, the businesses that donated, the volunteers who answered the phones.

“Everyone was just on board with it, we had such a great time. We’re so proud of the community we live in.”

As well MacPherson said they are grateful to Seaside Communications for hosting the telethon and to the Savoy Theatre for providing the venue.

MacPherson said there are about 60 people in the food bank every day for a hot meal and about 25 grocery orders are given out daily. However with the cold weather and Christmas coming they know these numbers are going to go up.

“These funds will allow us to fill our shelves up which is good and get ready for the Christmas baskets.”

MacPherson said people are donating items for the baskets and volunteers are helping wrap gifts.

In the meantime people wishing to honour their pledge can do so at the Royal Bank in Glace Bay or at the food bank at 2 Hector St. Cheques can also be mailed to Glace Bay Food Bank, Box 552, Glace Bay, N.S., B1A 6G4.
