Sentencing set for January

-

SYDNEY — A Victoria County man is to be sentenced in January after pleading guilty to weapon and obstruction of justice charges.

Kyle Roland Granter, 24, of New Haven, entered guilty pleas to charges of pointing a firearm (a 20-gauge pump action shotgun), uttering a threat, assault, two counts of breaching court orders, storing a firearm in a careless manner and obstruction by offering to pay $5,000 to the victim if they dropped the charges.

The offences occurred between March and September in New Haven. Several other offences were dismissed.

According to an agreed statement of facts presented after Granter entered guilty pleas, the court was told that Granter had accused his girlfriend of cheating on him.

He became upset after reading text messages on her phone involving another male and loaded a 20-gauge shotgun and threatened to shoot himself. He also pointed the gun at his girlfriend. He later threatened to beat another man.

Throughout August and September, Granter attempted to contact his girlfriend through social media sites and had two other people contact her to advise she contact Granter. During this time, Granter is to have offered his former girlfriend $5,000 if she would drop the charges.

Granter continues to be on remand and is to be sentenced Jan. 29.
