It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmothe­r, great grandmothe­r and friend, Margaret Elain MacDonald, 81, on November 29, 2017 at the Northside Community Guest Home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Glace Bay on November 12, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Veronica (Lollie) and Leo O’Neill.

She was employed in her earlier years at various grocery stores in Glace Bay and later became a foster parent opening her heart and her home to numerous foster children over the years. She was a wonderful homemaker and took great pride in everything she did. She was a hard worker and would lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. She had a very outgoing personalit­y with a hearty laugh who touched hearts of all who knew her. Elaine was a member of St. Anne’s Parish, Glace Bay, Carmelites, and a Eucharisti­c minister. She was also a member of the Birch Grove Ladies Auxiliary for many years. Both her and Jeanie enjoyed many visits to Tim Hortons socializin­g with friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Marie Murray, Glace Bay, who was her care giver prior to entering Northside Community Guest Home, Mary Lou Proulx, Oshawa, Ont, Debbie (Mike) Simms, Ottawa, Ont; a son, Glen (Lynette), Aurora, Ont; and a foster daughter, Joan (Michael) Lahey, Sydney.

Her most cherished treasures in her life were her grandchild­ren, Devin (Laura) Murray, Brian “Beezer” (Bernice) Murray, John and Danielle Proulx, Stephanie and Mitchell Simms, Matthew and Nicholas MacDonald, Sherril Delvecchio and Colleen Lahey; as well as greatgrand­children, Harleen Proulx, Tyson Murray, Avery Phillips, Katie- Ann Lahey and baby to be, Zoey Murray.

She is also survived by sisters, Francie Gilbert, Mildred Haiste; brother, Joey O’Neill; brother-in-law, Hugh (Dianne) MacDonald.

Besides her parents she was predecease­d by the husband, Jack; daughter, Jeanie; sons-inlaw, Guy Murray, Paul Proulx; brother, Tommy, Jackie, Billy, Jake; sisters, Patricia, Jeannie, and Mella.

A very sincere heartfelt thank you to the staff of Northside Community Guest Home for their kindness, love and support not only to our mother, but to us, the family. You went above and beyond and you will always, each and everyone of you, be held closely in our hearts.

Visitation will be held at Patten Funeral Home 71 Union St., Glace Bay, on Sunday, December 3, 2017 from 7-9 p.m. with funeral service at Holy Cross Church on Monday December 4 at 10 a.m.

Burial to take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Northside Community Guest Home.
