‘I love the holidays’
More than 40 floats in Glace Bay’s Christmas parade
Hundreds of people rang in the holiday season in Glace Bay on Friday night by watching an annual Christmas parade make its way way through the community.
For many people, the parade, which this year featured nearly 40 floats, is an ideal way to kick off the holiday season.
“I find that this is the set off to the Christmas season. December 1st is when people start decorating their homes and I think that this (parade) puts everyone in the Christmas spirit,” said John Chant, chief of the Glace Bay Volunteer Fire Department.
Many who took in the parade, such as Grace Halfyard, 10, from Glace Bay, said they liked the feeling of the holiday season getting closer and enjoyed the songs they heard during the parade.
“I loved the Christmas music. I love the holidays and the feeling of Christmas is really fun,” said Halfyard.
Emily Neville, 15, of Sydney, who was portraying a Who from Whoville for the Meco Construction Disaster Kleenup’s float in the parade, said her favourite part of a parade that had everything from Santa Claus to the Grinch was being with her friends.
“It’s good for all of us to get together and do something fun for the community. I’m honestly really excited because I love Christmas. It’s my favourite thing,” said Neville.
The holiday cheer was shared by hundreds of people and also
organizations which wanted to give back to their community. Irene Hennessey from Glace Bay was on the Atlantic Superstore’s float and said it was a good feeling to be involved with an event that entertained the people of Glace Bay.
“It’s really exciting — every year we (Atlantic Superstore)
participate,” said Hennessey. “We just love being a part of the community.”
The parade started at 6:30 p.m. at the Glace Bay Volunteer Fire Department hall and featured multiple floats from various organizations.
