Two Glace Bay women were transported to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with undetermined injuries after being hit by a vehicle while in a crosswalk on Commercial Street in Glace Bay Friday morning.

Desiree Vassallo, spokesperson for the Cape Breton Regional Police Service, said the two woman, ages 50 and 57, were transported by EHS to Cape Breton Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. As of late Friday afternoon, both remained in hospital in stable condition.

Police responded to reports of the collision on Commercial Street near York Street at approximately 8:30 a.m.

“A 911 call came in from witnesses,” Vassallo said.

Sgt. Joe Farrell of the Cape Breton Regional Police Service said the male driver of the vehicle wasn’t injured.

The driver, who is from Glace Bay, was the sole occupant in the vehicle.

The vehicle was damaged, including scratches on the front and a broken windshield.

Commercial Street was closed to traffic. Members of the Traffic Safety and Forensic Identification Units assisted patrol officers on scene taking

measurements and taking statements from witnesses.

Police couldn’t say late Friday whether or not charges were pending as the investigation was continuing.

Daniel Cole and his partner Jeanette MacDonald were on

the other side of Commercial Street going in the Y’s Men’s and Women’s hall to pick something up when the accident occurred.

“We were walking in the hall and saw them crossing in the crosswalk,” Cole said.

MacDonald said they came

right back out of the hall to discover the women had been hit by a vehicle.

“One was laying on the ground and another sitting beside her,” MacDonald said. “They both work at the A&W.”

MacDonald said there would

have been lots of witnesses as there were a lot of people sitting in their cars in a parking lot beside Tim Horton’s adjacent to the crosswalk, at the time of the accident.
