Mary-Anne Arsenault advances to Scotties final
Jamie Murphy takes over first in Tankard
Mary-Anne Arsenault moved into first place at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts women’s curling championship with a pair of wins on Friday at the Dartmouth Curling Club.
Dartmouth’s Arsenault opened the day with an 8-1 victory over Lakeshore’s Isabelle Ladouceur. She followed up with an 8-6 decision against Truro’s Colleen Pinkney. The day’s work earned Arsenault’s rink a direct trip to Sunday’s tournament final.
Kristen MacDiarmid of the Halifax Curling Club dropped both of her games to slip to second place at 5-2. She fell 7-5 to Jill Brothers of Mayflower and 8-6 to Theresa Breen, also of Mayflower.
Breen later beat Julie McEvoy of the CFB Halifax Curling Club 6-4 to put those two rinks in a tie for third place. They both finished at 4-3 and will play a tiebreaker game at 9 a.m. on Saturday to determine who will advance to the semifinal against MacDiarmid.
Also on Friday, McEvoy edged Brothers 6-5, Pinkney defeated Mayflower’s Colleen Jones 9-5 and Jones beat Ladouceur 7-4.
Saturday’s semifinal will be played on Saturday at 7 p.m. and the final is at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
In the Deloitte Tankard, Jamie Murphy of the Halifax Curling Club took over sole possession of first place with a victory in the early draw on Friday at the Dartmouth Curling Club.
Murphy defeated Chad Stevens of Mayflower 8-3 in eight ends to improve to 5-1. Stevens falls to 4-2. Mark Dacey of Mayflower also moved to 4-2 with an 8-6 win against Dartmouth’s Stuart Thompson. The loss dropped Thompson to 3-3 heading into Friday’s late draw.
Kendal Thompson of Mayflower fell to 3-3 after dropping a 10-7 game to Mike Flemming of Mayflower and Mayflower’s Brent MacDougall (2-4) jumped over Halifax Curling Club’s Greg Power (1-5) with a narrow 10-9 victory in a head-to-head game.
The men’s semi is at 2 p.m. on Saturday and the championship draw is on Sunday at 9 a.m.
