ISLAND GIRLS
Cape Breton’s bestknown female performers coming to Savoy in April.
Cape Breton’s best known female performers will be taking to the Savoy Theatre stage on April 21-22 as part of “Island Girls,” a night of music and comedy.
Pam Leader, executive director of the Glace Bay theatre, is so excited about the show — which is in the process of being written — that she is opening ticket sales earlier than usual. Tickets are on sale today.
“I am so excited about this show,” said Leader. “Having those four ladies on the Savoy stage at the same time will be amazing.”
Even getting the four performers involved to have openings at the same time in their busy schedules was a tricky matter.
“The stars have absolutely aligned for this one,” says Leader.
The new and original show will feature Bette MacDonald, Heather Rankin, Lucy MacNeil and Jenn Sheppard.
While the four have worked with each other in various combos over the year, it’s the first time all four have done a show together.
“There’s never been the four of us together,” said comedian Bette MacDonald. “It’s going to be a lot of fun to see how this goes.”
Jenn Sheppard admits she’s in awe of the other performers.
“I feel like I’ve won the lottery to get to step on stage with these women,” said Sheppard. “I think the goal here is to represent all corners of Cape Breton music and comedy.”
Sheppard is best known as a singer but she’s no stranger to acting and musical theatre as well. She also writes.
MacDonald is well known for her Cape Breton characters, including Beulah Claxton, a notso-successful singer.
She’s also known to dabble in jazz singing.
Heather Rankin was a member
of the world-famous Rankin Family and released several successful solo albums.
She has also participated in acting, best known around here for her work in the Cape Breton Summertime Revue. Lucy MacNeil sings and is a well-known multi-instrumentalist and member of the Barra MacNeils.
