Norma Kowalchuk, 80 years young, passed away on Good Friday, March 30, 2018 at the Dartmouth General Hospital.

Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Aucoin) Larade.

She is survived by the lights of her life, her son, Wally Kowalchuk (Nancy Jenkins); granddaugh­ters, Lexi and Tasha; her four best friends and sisters, Kay (Ernest) Moffat, Josey Ritcey, Halifax, Lill Vance, Florida, Gloria Kujawa, Ohio; many nieces, nephews, grandniece­s, nephews and her extended Cape Breton family, Peter and Anne Mombourque­tte, Maurice and Jessie Kowal and Murray Flemming.

She was pre-deceased by her infant brother, Joseph; former husband, Walter Kowalchuk; brothers-in-law, Albert Aucoin, John Ritcey, Rupert Vance, Timothy Kujawa, and Michael Kowalchuk; sisters-in-law, Florence Lowalchuk and Mary Fleming.

Norma received her RN at St. Elizabeth’s in Sydney and became a life-long care giver, retiring in 1997 from the Dartmouth General Hospital. A true Cape Bretoner, Norma loved music, tea, cards and conversati­on. She enjoyed her Eastern Passage, NS community, but also found great joy in travelling to PEI to see her son and family, Cape Breton, Florida and abroad. Norma had an energetic approach to life, touching each and every person she came across with her love, compassion, spirit and unwavering wit.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the care workers who provided support to Norma, and to the nurses and doctors at Dartmouth General who provided compassion­ate care in her last few days.

Visitation with be at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 15 Caledonia Rd., Dartmouth on April 19th, 7-9 p.m. and funeral April 20th at 11 a.m. with reception and internment to follow. Interment will be at Heaven’s Gate Cemetery, 33 Old Sackville Rd., Lower Sackville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
