Aiding communication

Series of workshops to show devices that can help with hearing

- Rosalind Wright

The Starting Hear column took a little break for a while, but it is back and I am happy to kick off the first one by talking about our upcoming “Hearing Help Series.”

This will be a four-part series of workshops offered once a week beginning on May 1. Each workshop will run from 10 a.m. – 12 noon.

The first one is called “Help with my Hearing.” We will talk about how we hear and look at the various devices that can assist you with your hearing.

On May 8, we will look how art therapy can help you relieve anxiety and the stress coping with hearing loss and we will use acrylics to paint a picture on canvas.

On May 15, we will discuss communication tips and techniques along with understanding how speechreading plays a part in communication.

Finally, on May 22, we will chart your course by looking at the audiogram to make sense of the graph along with ways to protect your hearing.

The fee for each class is $15 and pre-registration is required as there is limited seating. You may call 902-564-0003 or email rwright@ns.aliantzinc.ca

The society also has a new webpage at www.deafandhardofhearing.com. You can keep up to date on what is happening with us.

Hearing loss affects everyone. Unfortunately, with some noise induced hearing loss it may not become obvious until later in life and with presbycusis (hearing loss due to the aging process), we tend to see a higher incidence of hearing loss in our senior population.

Hearing loss is a prevalent disability in Canada as well as across Cape Breton especially with our demographics disproportionately skewed towards seniors. It has been estimated that in Cape Breton County alone, upwards of 10,000 persons may be confronted with this chronic condition.

We are hoping that the “Hearing Help Series” will not only offer some benefit to those who have hearing loss, but also to their loved ones. Communication is a two-way street and it is just as important to have a spouse or family member attend too.

Society of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nova Scotians is located at 762 Victoria Road in Whitney Pier. Clare Le Blanc and I look forward to hearing from you.

It all starts hear.
